John McCrorie, Owner

Port Angeles

Robert “Bob” McCrorie started selling furniture and floor coverings to folks on the Olympic Peninsula back in 1949. Bob’s love for this industry and the people it brought him in contact with encouraged him to open his own store. In the spring of 1958 his dream came to reality with the Grand Opening of McCrorie Thompson, a Furniture, Appliance, and Flooring Store. The next 45 years, like everyone’s life, have seen many changes in the face of the Original McCrorie Thompson. Years later, after working in retail for several years in Portland, Oregon, Bob’s son John returned back to the Peninsula. His goal was to open a separate store concentrating just on flooring and window coverings. In 1988 John, with the help of his dad, started McCrorie Interiors, a Specialty Flooring store just east of Port Angeles. Later, John’s brother David, started a branch store in Port Hadlock. In 1998, John was invited to join Carpet One, a cooperative of Independent Flooring retailers in North America. Carpet One has since grown to become the largest group of flooring dealers in the world, and McCrorie Carpet One, has become the largest flooring store on the Olympic Peninsula. Mark Leffers, Sales

Port Angeles

On a US Army base in Yokohama, Japan, I was the firstborn son of 20-year-old Army Sergeant Paul Leffers and his Japanese-American bride Kazuko. I had their undivided attention until my brother Jeff arrived 18 months later. At age 3, my father’s obligation to the Army was completed; and the 4 of us steamed home to the US on an ocean liner. While I have no memory of the trip, I’ve been told that my dad had to snatch me from the ship’s railing before an inevitable fall into the ocean. To this day, travel by water is avoided as much as possible, as well as watching movies such as “The Perfect Storm.” Finally arriving in Seattle, we visited my mother’s relatives for a time before continuing the journey to my dad’s hometown of Churubusco, Indiana which was where I spent my childhood attending Catholic grade and high schools and was surrounded by a warm extended family of paternal grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. It was a farming community, and my grandfather Ed always managed to find chores for me to do. While it seemed very annoying growing up, it was one of the reasons why I have such a strong work ethic. Nothing was just given. You earned your way by working hard, respecting your elders, and staying out of trouble. Sadly, my mother Kazuko passed away after a 9-year battle with lung cancer when I was only 12-years-old and dad struggled to raise 2 boys on his own. When my dad remarried, our family instantly grew to 7, and then 8. Everyone was expected to contribute to the family. Education was very important to my father who insisted I would go to college, and I enrolled at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana where I earned a BS in Physical Education and History. Later years have made me wish that I had gone into sports medicine or business or directly to work. Any lamentations on my part are quickly answered by my wife Ginger, who reminds me that we probably wouldn’t have met without the I.U. experience. Physical fitness has always been important to me and follows that work ethic. Golf is my passion and a wonderful way to work out frustration. Although my wife has not always supported the golfing, she seems to be “coming around” after 37 years of marriage. In addition, I am an active member of Independent Bible Church, participating in the Prison Ministry on Tuesdays. I have had the privilege of teaching the Bible at Clallam Bay and marvel at the testimonies we hear. Their hardships and poor past decisions are humbling. We have 3 wonderful adult children including 2 sons (Jason and Garrett), a beautiful daughter-in-law (Katie - Jason’s bride), a lovely daughter (Jessica), 3 healthy, energetic granddaughters, and will soon add a grandson to the family. The highlight of my day is recalling something amusing the grandkids have said. It can literally make me laugh out loud, and I am blessed with their love. God has been abundant to me in His mercy and grace through His son Jesus Christ, and I am overwhelmed. Mark can be reached at mark@mccrorie.com

Bob Gridley, Sales

Port Angeles

Bob Gridley: "Mr. Detail". As a former professional and current manager of my own residential and commercial properties - you will find that I tend to view your project from an extremely detailed, nuts-and-bolts technical, team and finally, integrated design, texture and color orientations. Knowledge is power - I will teach you as much as you are willing to learn about what you are trying to accomplish with new floor-coverings, granite or quartz counter-tops and top tier window treatments. This Nebraska ranch country boy is old school; I eschew "quick and easy"; I will shoot your home or building space distances with a laser, accurate to 1/16" over 100 feet, measure height differentials with a mechanic's steel rule graduated in 1/64" increments and I will hand-draw your space on-site, scaled, on engineering paper. I am known for thoroughness and detail in all things, and especially in my site inspections and work-ups, as well as for honesty, integrity, genuine caring, warmth and commitment to generating for you the absolute very best that I am capable of as to your completed dream project. "Transforming your World... - one step at a time. We've only just begun!!" I can be reached at bob@mccrorie.com
