What is The Difference Between Solid and Engineered Hardwood?
While most of us love the look of natural hardwood floors, many don’t realize how much is going on below the surface. Solid hardwood and engineered hardwood look very much alike- but, as it turns out, there’s more than meets the eye.
Made from a single plank of wood, solid hardwood is what automatically comes to mind when we think of this type of flooring. A favorite of history buffs and decorating addicts alike, solid hardwood can be refinished over and over (and over) again. However, this stunning flooring isn’t a good choice for spaces below grade.
In more recent years, engineered hardwood has burgeoned onto the market, with much fanfare. While it’s also made using 100% wood, engineered flooring is constructed in many layers, resulting in a denser and sturdier product that’s appropriate for most spaces- including below grade. Engineered hardwood is growing in popularity for its affordability, flexibility, and durability. It can be refinished once or twice – still leaving room for potential change.
